Back to the Future or the Importance of Documenting the (Her)stories of FSD

Fri, June 10, 15:30 to 16:45, Fukuoka Hilton, Koh

Abstract

Over 30 years, FSD has provided a dynamic and supportive scholarly space to share research and work experiences as well as friendships. I was elected vice chair in 2001 on a platform to further internationalise FSD to better reflect globalising developments in feminist media scholarship. During six years as an FSD officer, I helped to steer on-going initiatives and establish new ones, always
with one eye on my commitment to global inclusivity. Helping to organise FSD’s 20th anniversary in Dresden I hoped that I had gone some way to realising this goal. We need to remember FSD’s many triumphs and challenges. In my intervention, I argue that we should commit to formally gathering, cataloguing and maintaining FSD’s history. It is important that we acknowledge by documenting and protecting our many accomplishments as well set backs, so as to help ensure there is a robust future for feminist media scholarship.
