When We are the Creators: Implications of User Generation of Inspiring Media Messages

Mon, June 13, 9:30 to 10:45, Fukuoka Hilton, Argos C

Abstract

Recent scholarship in media psychology has begun to establish the idea that inspiring media may be harnessed for purposes of social good – increasing feelings of connectedness with others, motivating altruism, and enhancing feelings of meaningfulness. This talk will expand upon this line of research to consider the implications of evolving media technologies. Specifically, this talk will discuss the importance of user creation of media content (rather than simple consumption of content) to further enhance the prosocial outcomes of inspiring media. Data from a study in which participants created a moving video (versus viewed one) will be presented, and applications to additional technologies will be discussed.
