Postcolonial Cultural Economy and Cultural Production

Sat, May 27, 8:00 to 9:15, Hilton San Diego Bayfront, Floor: 3, Aqua 309

Abstract

Postcolonial studies had a major impact on media and cultural theorists for providing the deconstructive tools and critical insights that help explain why representations of race in the media take the shape that they do. But with its roots in literary studies, a postcolonial approach to media often treats texts in a vacuum, as though they exist outside the commodity system, or are immune from commodification. In other words, what if we understand that under neoliberalism, the third space has become a commodified space? In this talk I argue for an interdisciplinary approach that I label ‘postcolonial cultural economy’ that combines postcolonial studies with critical political economy that can provide a fuller and necessary account of how knowledges about the Other are produced through the rationalised production techniques of the cultural industries. In doing so it gives us a keener understanding of the operations of capitalism and Empire.
