This study examines gaming motivations for two different genre of multiplayer games-- casual social network games (SNGs) and massively multiplayer online (MMO) games—and examines whether there are gender differences in motivation after taking genre into consideration. Using a self-determination theory perspective to categorize of motivations, we find that hypotheses of gender differences from previous games research are not supported. We discuss why this may be, and how it is important to take into consideration both the affordances and culture associated with different game genres rather than generalizing gender effects to all games.
