Defying Death: Black Joy as Resistance Online

Mon, May 28, 11:00 to 12:15, Hilton Old Town, Floor: M, Liszt

Abstract

African American online social communities have demonstrated their capacity to organize and create networks of resistance in the wake of state violence and systematic oppression. Simultaneously, though, the refusal to be limited by mediated images of death, dismay, and destruction speaks to the long tradition of African American rhetoric to combat oppression. Resistance discourse online demonstrates the resilience of the black imagination and the defiance of death through technological and communicative skill and acumen. Though intentional expressions of unencumbered joy, the online rhetoric of Black Americans continues to demonstrate the power of communication in claiming one’s freedom.
