This is probably the first study in China that evaluates the effectiveness of communication between genetic counselors and their “patients.” By applying both quantitative-based Peer Observed Interaction and Structured Evaluation (POISE) method and qualitative-based ethnographic method to studying a genetic counselor training course, it is found that knowledge preparation and communication, counseling skills, and confidence are the most needed to be improved among the Chinese genetic counselors.
