Theorizing Gender and Communication in the Virtual World

Mon, May 28, 9:30 to 10:45, Hilton Prague, Floor: M, Palmovka

Abstract

Virtual worlds are two or three-dimensional spaces with multiple modalities where users could engage in mediated interactions with other users. In these spaces, users can assume identities that are relatively unburdened by offline biases associated with the visible markers of gender. Benefield will discuss how theories of gender and communication can be tested, challenged, and extended using digital trace data collected in virtual worlds.
