This conceptual paper aims to demonstrate how a paradigm shift from media effects to dynamic systems changes one’s research assumptions, research questions, experimental design, data collection and analysis, and results, using the co-viewing literature as an example. We also discuss how dynamics systems theory has important implications for communication research.
