Fictional Entertainment and Public Connection: Audiences and TV-Series in Norway

Fri, May 25, 8:00 to 9:15, Hilton Prague, Floor: M, Karlin II

Abstract

This study investigates civic dimensions of audience’s use of TV-series through the theoretical perspective of public connection. Whereas the public connection perspective thus far primarily has been employed in the context of news usage, this study, first, develops a conceptual framework apt to study audience’s use of also TV-series. Second, based on large-scale qualitative data collection from Norway, this study empirically highlights how the use of TV-series forms part of diverse yet typical orientations towards the sphere of politics. In doing so, this study offers both new conceptual understanding and new empirical knowledge of how the media connect people to the public and political world – not only through news, but also through fictional entertainment such as TV-series.
