The purpose of this experiment is to investigate how smokers mentally process and respond to anti-tobacco videos that vary in negative emotional intensity and narrative. Young adult smokers (N=43) viewed the videos while physiological indicators of cognitive and emotional processing were recorded. After the videos, smokers also indicated their conscious message evaluations. Preliminary results indicate that the presence of a strong narrative may decrease defensive processing of high negative intensity videos.
