This poster introduces the current situation, driving force behind, and future direction of leadership education for college students in China. It spotlights a program in Shanghai, where leadership education the responsibility of the student affairs department, which became an effective method of the cultivation of students' values and ability training.

Detailed Abstract

With the rapid development of Chinese society, economy and culture in the past ten years, the demand for talent is growing and the value of leadership education for college students is increasing in mainland China. This paper mainly introduces the current situation and future direction of leadership education for college students, with the representative education programs in Chinese typical colleges and universities. The driving force of the development is interpreted. The study shows that student leadership education in China is still in the primary stage. Since 2011, remarkable developments have took place with a number of specialized research institutions and organizations have been established, various forms of training and forums have been organized, the number of the research supported by funds have increased. Uneven development take place in different regions and universities. Most of the theoretical researches are found in developed cities with high internationalization and practical researches occur in key universities of coastal areas, with the themes focus on leadership training in higher education. Compared with the theoretical construction, the achievements of practical research are more abundant. Systematic research on Chinese college students began to be carried out in the past few years. This paper shows in Shanghai,leadership education is one of the responsibility of student affairs department.It becomes an effective method of the cultivation of students' values and ability training.The leading role of the core values is emphasized and various and distinctive education ways are created.
In the future of Shanghai, scientific leadership education system for college students will be constructed from the three dimensions of education content, methods and evaluation. College students' leadership education textbooks will be published in four versions, including the training of teachers, the education of students, introduction of western cases, analysis of Chinese cases. The team of counselors for leadership education will be trained and more characteristic projects for college students will be put into practice. The university Leadership Forum will be held and research will be funded to build a community of research and practice, exploring development of leadership for Chinese college students.
