Women Courageous: Navigating the Leadership Labyrinth and Beyond

Thu, October 24, 13:00 to 16:00, Westin Marriott, Oak

Session Submission Type: Half-Day Workshop

Session Evaluation Form

Description

Women! Why? How? When? Who?

Why are there so few women leaders in our organizations?

How might we change this situation to ensure excellence in leadership through gender bilingualism?

When should this process of change begin?

Who are the people responsible to effect this change?

Women leaders encounter challenges and opportunities that are different than those experienced by men in the workplace, and it is important to hear women’s stories about how to both navigate and thrive.

This half-day workshop focuses on women leaders from diverse sectors who will share their stories of leadership development, growth, and advancement. Though the focus of this workshop surrounds women leaders, we invite men to attend this workshop as building a new cultural norm requires a shift in mindset for both men and women.

The women who will lead this workshop work in many different sectors, and they will discuss the challenges they face(d) on the road to leadership as well as the resources that enabled them to endure and prevail.

Detailed Abstract

We will focus our discussion around an array of organizations who are developing (gender) “bilingualism” as advocated by Whittenberg-Cox & Maitland (2009, p. 15), who stated “Companies and managers, both men and women, will reap benefits of ‘womenomics’ by learning to become gender-bilingual. Understanding gender difference will enable them to manage mixed teams more effectively and to respond more relevantly to a growing share of their customer base”.

Sharing the Voices of Women as Examples for Emerging Women Leaders
The goal of this workshop is not to argue the merits of women in leadership, nor to provide the scientific data that supports the construct of the efficacy of women in leadership. The goal of this workshop is to provide a forum that gives voice to the many courageous women, and some
of the men who enacted Gender Bilingualism, in high profile leadership positions and to discuss the internal voice of courage that kept those women moving forward when adversity and the maze of the leadership labyrinth pressed them to move backwards. This workshop seeks to provide a visual and contextual experience of a set of women role models who successfully traverse adversity. Their example for emerging and senior women leaders, some of whom might wonder how they can effectively navigate the Leadership Labyrinth as articulated by Northouse (2018), so that they can continue their evolution as organizational leaders.

This workshop brings the power of shared stories to bear upon varied contexts such that the embers of courage might be fanned into flame in a way that empowers and enables participants to move forward in their own leadership journeys, build stronger organizations, and allows genders to work together most effectively.
