Women Leaders Over 70

Tue, June 18, 3:45 to 5:00pm, 1440 Multiversity, Redwood Auditorium

Short Description

Many women over 70 are starting second, third, or fourth careers and are making a difference. There is literature on women in politics, management, law, academia, and on corporate boards and suggestions that the old life stages literature is obsolete but virtually no research focused on women and leadership among elders. This proposed research will identify best practices and skill sets for advancing women in leadership.

Detailed Abstract

This proposed qualitative study of women leader exemplars will present a mixture of some who are making a big difference on a global scale and others who are leading projects on a more local scale. After IRB approval, the researchers will schedule interviews with the following women leaders:

Barbara Browning
Director - Quality Assurance (retired)
UCLA Medical Center - Santa Monica
Focused on securing volunteers for Hospice in Home, a program to care for cancer and AIDS patients, and volunteering for the American Red Cross.

Heidi Crooks
Chief Nursing Officer and Senior Associate Director of Operations and Patient Care Service (retired)
UCLA Health
Originally from Finland and plans to travel overseas to assist with medical missions. “I’ve worked with the International Red Cross, the Save the Children Fund in Geneva and helped UCLA’s Department of Nursing launch a baccalaureate program for nurses in Armenia. I want to do more of this type of work."

Elizabeth Isele
Global Institute for Experienced Entrepreneurship
Senior Fellow in Social Innovation, Babson College
Associate Fellow in Global Economics and Finance, Chatham House: The Royal Institute of International Affairs
In 2012, at age 70, launched Senior Entrepreneurship Works for her third “career.” Is interested in Saudi Arabia, as it will be hosting the G20 Summit in 2020. Has been an active participant in the 2017 G20 Summit in Berlin and is now helping design meeting in Buenos Aires and, based on earlier work with Japan, will also be advancing the economic potential of women entrepreneurs and intergenerational startups for the Osaka meeting.

Hemlata Momaya
Founder and Executive Director
Bal Jagat - Children's World, Inc.
Expanding Bal Jagat to provide additional international adoption services in countries such as Bulgaria

Elna Tymes
Doctoral Candidate
University of Phoenix - School of Advanced Studies - Health Administration
Researching and giving presentations on various aspects of aging in the US for over 20 years. Serves on her county’s Senior Care Commission as well as four city- and county-wide and national boards and organizations related to seniors and aging. Has taught at Stanford University and gives presentations around the San Francisco Bay Area. Plans to expand research and dissemination of findings to the community of scholars upon earning doctoral degree.

A holistic approach will be used to chronicle how these women got to this stage in life and how they are experiencing life after 70 - are they totally consumed by leading or are they doing other things also? Discussion questions will include motivational factors, the role of resilience, other women leader exemplars who should be considered, and participant contributions.
