Thu, July 18, 3:35 to 4:25pm, TBA

Abstract

The aim of this paper is to increase the debate about the role of the third sector in promoting social responsibility learning and implementation at small organizations.

In the past, the third sector had a deep engagement with learning, especially with the most excluded learners (Department for business innovation and skills, 2013) and according to research small organizations could be considered the excluded learners of social responsibility as they are falling behind in the implementations of social responsibility strategies, being the main barrier lack of knowledge about the topic. (Aucancela, Suasti, & Vásquez, 2023)

Social responsibility can be defined as the responsibility organizations and individuals have towards the planet and society, while these actors contribute to prosperity taking in to account the expectations and impacts on stakeholders and the ethical behavior that contributes to sustainable development. (ISO, 2010; Hadj, Omri, & Al-Tit, 2020. Organizations should be able to adopt social responsibility regardless of their size.

According to studies, social responsibility adoption by small organizations have improved the level of innovation, competitivity and stakeholders’ loyalty. (Ávila-Batista, Varona-Leyva, Ochoa-Ávila, & ÁvilasHernández, 2023; Çera, Khan, Bláhová, & Belas, 2022). Small and medium organizations, represent 72% of informal and formal jobs in Mexico (INEGI, 2022) and the covid pandemic impacted the economic aspects of these organizations deeply, increasing the need for a more innovative and competitive business strategies, once again putting small organizations at risk.

As a response to the aforementioned need, it´s necessary understand that the lack of knowledge on issues related to social responsibility is a barrier for implementing social responsibility actions, in this sense the community members subject experts have create ¨below the radar¨ actions to improve in small scale (Phillimore, McCabe, SoteriProctor, & Taylor, 2010) the understanding of small organizations of the topic.

To illustrate these arguments, we used a single case study method research with qualitative analysis for describe and analyze the experience of reinventaRSE a small boutique consulting firm focus on the implementation of social responsibility strategies for Small Organizations. The area of work of reinventaRSE is Mesoamerica where it has promoted and support organizations like Clos de Tres Cantos.

This experience articulate consulting and teaching, as the initial stages of a social responsibility strategy require that members of the organizations understand in deep, they role and the fundamental materials of social responsibility. With this paper, we seek to explore the fostering of social responsibility knowledge by the third sector its strengths and limits from a collaborative perspective.
