Gender-responsive budgeting has become a recent research area that scholars have focused on worldwide. Applying a qualitative research design, this study examines the impact of the gender-responsive budgeting initiatives implemented by the Secretaría Distrital de la Mujer (District Office for Woman) in Bogotá, District Capital of Colombia, between 2020 and 2023. More specifically, this study aims to better understand how the city government has contributed to addressing gender equity by implementing these initiatives. The main research questions addressed in this study are: 1) How were the initiatives adopted and what are the specifics of the initiatives?, 2) What has been the impact of the initiatives in terms of: a) Have spending priorities changed throughout the years? and b) Are programs more impactful than others and, thus, receive more funding?, and 3) How sustainable are these initiatives? Will they survive regime change? By analyzing the impact of programs and services offered by the Secretaría Distrital de la de Mujer of Bogotá, this study will serve as an example for other Latin American capital cities on what can be learned to emulate those efforts to promote gender equity.
