Social Responsibility in Civil Society Organizations: A bibliometric study in Scopus in the period 2003 to 2023

Tue, July 16, 2:00 to 3:30pm, TBA

Abstract

Social Responsibility (SR) has been the object of scientific study since the appearance of Bowen's seminal survey (1953) published in Fortune magazine, which had the company as the subject of study; later, the subject of study would be expanded to the university. starting from the UNESCO World Conference on Higher Education in 1998 when they were called to assume greater social responsibility in the context of their role in the knowledge society and subsequently when the term USR was coined in 2008 by Francois Valleys. Studies on responsibility in Civil Society Organizations (CSO) have been much less prolific. This gap is what we try to explore in this bibliometric study that analyzes the scientific production available from 2003 to 2023 in Scopus. For this purpose, texts were analyzed with the search words “Social AND Responsibility AND in AND NGO”, filtered by the period 2003 to 2023 because the highest production in a first search without filter was located in this range of years, selecting only English and Spanish languages in scientific articles, conference proceedings, books and chapters in books. Under these filters, 243 results were found. This review made it possible to map the evolution of SR on a timeline, locating the main debates and paradigm shifts around the topic, as well as its main authors, schools of thought and specialized research centers.

The social implications of this study are located in the possibility of generating a broader discussion of the phenomenon, in identifying the pending topics of scientific discussion, but also in guiding the decisions of CSOs regarding the meanings, implications and applications of SR in their narratives, strategic plans and social intervention models. Finally, its originality consists of filling an exploratory gap on a topic that has not been analyzed in light of a similar bibliometric method that documents the academic evolution of the phenomenon.
