Session Submission Type: Panel
This panel is a focus on South Africa with reference to the high and continuing rates of social protest which dominate the civic space. The four papers examine the architecture or landscape of this protest activity, the tactics employed by protesting citizens, responses to protesters and to protest action and finally, the way in which protest action can be captured by right wing populism and whether this opens civic space for the building of a counter-movement for social justice.
