Civil Society Education: International Perspectives

Tue, July 16, 2:00 to 3:30pm, TBA

Session Submission Type: Roundtable Discussion

Abstract

This roundtable will bring together scholars who have been working collaboratively over the past decades to examine and further understand university based civil society education programs. With the support of a grant of $60,000 from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation, in collaboration with JNEL, we launched a study to develop a census of nongovernmental (NGO) and civil society education and training programs available throughout the world to educate leaders of these organizations, a companion piece to the U.S. database maintained by Seton Hall University. Included in the study are all types of education programs including those offered by universities within their own borders, those universities that deliver education abroad in collaboration with other universities or organizations, and other NGO training and education programs, including international, national, local and hybrid programs provided by NGOs or governments to leaders in the sector in various parts of the world (https://tltc.shu.edu/projects/global_ngos/). Working collaboratively with colleagues around the world, we have presented and published in this area on the census of programs including the number and types of courses, regional variations, and comparative analyses. To date, there have been four special themed issues published in the Journal of Nonprofit Education and Leadership, with additional special themed issues currently under development:
By comparing the various educational approaches around the globe our hope is to develop a conceptual and theoretical approach that will be useful in understanding and comparing the regional role of education and training programs in strengthening and sustaining civil society. Panel participants include authors who have contributed to these special themed issues, members of the JNEL Editorial Board, and special themed issue editors. The major focus of the roundtable is to have an interactive discussion among the panelists and with members of the audience regarding further work in this regard, perhaps leading to the creation of an edited volume using rigorous mixed methods approaches and peer reviewed chapters to further analyze data already compiled on nonprofit and philanthropic studies education across the globe. For example, the panelists are hoping to add more rigorous and comprehensive research on nonprofit and philanthropic studies education in sub-Saharan Africa, which has grown exponentially in the last ten years, and Latin America. With this project we hope to influence the future of nonprofit and philanthropic studies education to be more globally focused, inclusive and include multiple critical perspectives .
