Civil Society and Collaboration with the State and the Market

Wed, July 17, 2:00 to 3:30pm, TBA

Session Submission Type: Panel

Abstract

This panel will present and discuss the forthcoming book “Civil Society and Collaboration with the State and the Market” (Segnestam Larsson & Åberg, eds.). The book is intended to be used in credit-based education around the world and explores how, why, and when civil society collaborates with other sectors in society (see Gazley and Guo, 2020 for a systematic literature review).
There are several reasons as to why university students should learn more about cross-sectoral collaboration. Collaboration may, for example, have positive and sustainable impacts on society, such as creating new opportunities and solutions for social, economic, and environmental problems, building resilient and sustainable communities, and overcoming regulatory barriers. However, collaboration is also complex and diverse, shaped by historical and cultural contexts, as well as by specific challenges and dilemmas that arise in different regions and countries.
The textbook therefore includes a set of chapters from well-established researchers around the world that describe and analyze cross-sectoral collaboration with examples and illustrations from different sectors and regions. Three of the eight chapters in the book will be presented and discussed in the proposed panel:
• “Collaboration between nonprofit organizations and businesses” explores the options and design parameters of nonprofit-business collaboration, highlights the potentials and challenges of such collaborations, and provides examples and recommendations for practitioners and researchers. The chapter will be presented by Florentine Maier, Senior Researcher at the Institute for Nonprofit Management at the Vienna University of Economics and Business, Austria.
• “Collaborating with the public sector – a three-layered explanation” proposes a typology of public-nonprofit collaboration based on three levels of analysis: social origins theory, Public Administration Regimes, and different modes of collaboration. It also discusses how these levels interact to shape the conditions and dynamics of public-nonprofit collaboration in different contexts. The chapter will be presented by Johan Vamstad, Associate Professor at the Center for Civil Society Research at Marie Cederschiöld University, Sweden.
• “Government/Nonprofit Relationship Frameworks” presents two complementary approaches to understand the nature and evolution of government/nonprofit relations in the modern welfare state: the policy fields approach and the relationship type approach. It illustrates how these approaches can help explain the variations and complexities of intersectoral relations in different policy domains. The chapter will be presented by Annette Zimmer, Senior Professor at University of Münster, Germany.
Roseanne Mirabella, Professor of the Department of Political Science. Seton Hall University, USA, will serve as panel discussant. The discussion will focus on cross-cutting issues, such as why civil society collaborates and with whom as well as the diversity of and challenges related to cross-sectoral collaborations. Ola Segnestam Larsson and Pelle Åberg, Associate Professors at the Center for Civil Society Research at Marie Cederschiöld University, Sweden, will chair the panel.
