Session Submission Type: Innovative content or format
The Indiana University Lilly Family School of Philanthropy (school) invites researchers from around the world to join a dynamic conversation on the availability and collection of country-level data on generosity.
In collaboration with scholars and partners worldwide, the school generates a plethora of reports on large-scale giving both within the US (for example, Giving USA, but also others like the Philanthropy Panel Study and Study of High Net Worth Philanthropy) and globally (for example, Global Philanthropic Environment Index and Global Philanthropy Tracker). An important goal of our global research is to promote the collection of country-level data on generosity throughout the world. We invite all scholars with experience in or interested in the collection of data on aggregate giving at the country (or regional) level to join this conversation at ISTR in Antwerp. We hope that this gathering can facilitate both the collection of new country-level data for more countries as well as the systematic gathering of those reports and datasets that already exist.
The session will begin with a brief presentation going through the details of the data and methodologies behind Giving USA and the other national datasets, followed by a Q&A session and open discussion of (both extant and possible) global analogs. Session participants will have an opportunity to learn more about the methodologies behind existing data collection efforts in several countries, share their work and knowledge on other existing country-level data, and discuss what is needed to enhance data collection globally. These conversations will complement data collection efforts, culminating in information on existing country-level data on generosity being made publicly available online in late 2024.
Hosted by Jon Bergdoll, Associate Director of Data Partnerships at the Indiana University Lilly Family School of Philanthropy and lead analyst on Giving USA.
