Heralded as the champion of modernism in the 1930’s , Candido Portinari’s paintings embodied the turning point from an early allegorical approach into a politically engaged discourse on the representation of people and nation. Nonetheless, a closer observation of his works shows that actually he epitomized the state of eccleticism – i.e. a juxtaposition of antithetical atittudes facing modernity –prevailing along the first half of 20th century in Brazilian visual arts.
