The Frente de Organizaciones en Lucha (FOL) is a contemporary piquetero movement in Argentina engaging in a novel form of activism that they refer to as “complex territorial work.” This form of activism developed out of a Latin American tradition highly influenced by Paulo Freire that emphasizes consciousness-raising among the poor, which includes the basismo of the Third World Priests and the asentamientos of the Ecclesiastical Base Communities. Based on a year of ethnographic fieldwork with the FOL, I analyze this pedagogical approach to activism in light of the body of Latin American thought and practice from which it arose.
