Sunshine in a Backpack: Using Learning Design and Technology Methods Towards Adventure-Based Learning Experiences and Long-Term Mentoring in the Dominican Republic

Thu, May 28, 4:00 to 5:45pm, TBA

Abstract

This presentation examines the use of the tools and principles of Learning Design and Technologies to design the program Sunshine in a Backpack for children and youth in the Dominican Republic. Sunshine in a Backpack promotes innovative and holistic adventure-based learning experiences and long-term mentoring to children between 10 and 13 years old. The program works in partnership with a Kids Alive International orphanage in the Dominican Republic and the Purdue Extension’s Learning Network in Frankfort, Indiana. The program curriculum is grounded in a healthy leadership model of six interrelated dimensions and facilitated through realistic adventure-based learning experiences, the provision of accompanying learning tools in a backpack, and long-term mentorship with community role models. The presentation will discuss the ways in which Learning Design and Technologies offers tools to develop strategies to support children's behavior and attitude change after program implementation, and to measure the program's impact in their lives and communities.
