This paper examines José Luis González's involvement in the radical Hispanic mileaux of New York during the closing years of the 1940s. In New York,González participated in Communist-sponsored organizations and mutual aid societies, wrote for leftist Spanish-language newspapers, and taught at worker's schools, all of which attest to how the city's intellectual climate provided González with formative ideological experiences. González was thus part of a radical public culture that was both effervescent and rapidly dimming with the onset of McCarthysm and the Cold War, but whose lasting impressions can be traced throughout his corpus.
