Session Submission Type: Workshop
This workshop provides space for both junior and senior scholars based in unstable, narcotics dominated contexts to share complementary approaches, misgivings, and lessons with regard to security in and off the field. Topics for discussion include: the interface between research design and security risk; researcher conduct in light of abbreviated or long-term involvement; assessing risk on the ground (Goldstein 2014, Sluka 2012) and balancing the cost/benefit ratio; implications of multi-sited versus single-sited research; correlating data sought with appropriate security measures (i.e., broad surveys or deep ethnographic studies); the role of fear and trauma (Mahmood 2008, Theidon 2014) in researcher/participants; the glaring absence of aftercare in academe.
Kimberly S Theidon, Harvard University
Annette I Idler, Oxford University
Jeremy Slack, University of Arizona
Audrey A Winpenny, University of Pennsylvania
