Abstract

The complexity of the new societies that fell under the control of the Spanish required an extensive and multifaceted administrative apparatus. Studies of colonial administration in Spanish America have depicted an ineffective Hapsburg management that pales against a superior Bourbon government. Challenging this traditional view, the papers in this panel both illustrate the flexibility and negotiating capacity of the Hapsburg administration, and examine the diverse outcome of Bourbon rule. The dynastic change transformed to certain extent the administrative system, with both successes and failures, which illustrate a different mode of preserving the Spanish empire.
