Session Submission Type: Panel
This panel explores competing visions of agricultural development in Brazil. We focus on Brazil because it has one of the most dynamic agricultural sectors in the world and a more elaborate set of agrarian and agricultural policies than most countries in Latin America. The papers contrast models of development put forth by social movements and by agribusiness; question the hegemony of large commercial farms, and present evidence of the importance of family farms, and of small and medium sized farms; and analyze some of the key institutions and policies that govern land ownership and provide support to family farms.
