Session Submission Type: Panel
This panel will consider the persistence of the avant-garde as a reference in cultural production in Latin America from 1989 to the present. As dictatorships, neoliberal economic reforms, and an emerging state of exception have remade the representational grounds for avant-garde praxis, Latin American artists and writers continue to interrogate the legacy of the avant-garde, recalling the lives and works of past vanguardistas. We seek to understand the ways in which contemporary artists employ the avant-garde as a meta-aesthetic referent, evoking a modern tradition of aesthetic transgression, even as its original critical force can no longer be assumed.
