Session Submission Type: Workshop
In conjunction with a special issue of The Black Scholar, this workshop convenes scholars from multiple disciplines to analyze Dominican race relations against the grain of the cross-disciplinary consensus, primarily U.S.-based, that focuses on Dominicans’ “negrophobia,” “antihaitianismo,” and “self-hatred.” The workshop seeks to theorize Dominican blackness within globally comparative Black Studies, including articulations and disarticulations between blackness in the U.S., the Dominican Republic, Haiti, and the wider Caribbean and Latin America. Participants will discuss how we individually theorize Dominican blackness, how we build upon prior work on Dominican blackness, and future directions we anticipate (and hope) for Dominican blackness studies.
