Session Submission Type: Panel
The 1930s and 1940s witnessed widespread mobilization of writers across the Americas around the political issues of the day. In the context of the United States and American Studies, it has been productive to examine the period through the lens of the concept of a cultural front (Michael Denning), which brings together intellectuals of diverse social backgrounds and political commitments around a variety of common issues. This panel takes the notion of cultural front as the starting point for an examination of the 1930s and 1940s in Brazil and throughout the Americas. Presenters will explore, among other topics, political and aesthetic implications of intercontinental alliances between writers, artists and intellectuals.
