Session Submission Type: Panel
This two-session panel proposes the first study of Oscar Wilde’s impact on Latin American artistic, cultural, and political thought. Wilde was widely read in Latin America from the fin de siècle onwards, and his persona, writing, and thought shaped not only the region’s poetics, but also its public discourses and evolving identity. Wilde is now chiefly remembered in Latin America less as a writer than as a celebrity; still, traces of his thought remain in the region’s artistic, cultural and political spheres. Our panel will seek to reconstruct readings and deployments of Wilde throughout Latin America in the 20th and 21st centuries.
