Session Submission Type: Panel
With a clear focus on the republican period of the second half of the nineteenth century, this panel includes historians, cultural studies scholars and a social scientist. In keeping with this multidisciplinary approach the panel is also transnational in scope. Topics emerge from the republics of Peru, Ecuador, and Venezuela, as well as the influential discourse on republicanism emanating from Restoration-era Spain. Together these papers ask the question of how work was imagined and used by the framers of republican discourse while probing its limits and overall effects as an ordering concept.
Republicanismo democrático, etnicidad y nación en el Ecuador moderno - Valeria Coronel, FLACSO
The Discourse of Indolence: Labor, Progress, and National Identity in 19th Century Spain - Diana Arbaiza
Visions of the Moral Worker in Republican Peru - Ronald D Briggs, Barnard College
Tensiones políticas sobre la idea republicana de trabajo en la Venezuela del siglo XIX - Carolina Guerrero, Universidad Simón Bolívar
