Session Submission Type: Panel
Prison gang membership can be considered a form of guarantee to prisoner security, with very clear rules surrounding the limits of this security. Yet when discussing prisoner rehabilitation/reinsertion, (prison) gang membership is often considered especially problematic. Prison is mostly considered to be a space where gang deterrence rather than association should occur. But how does this work when ‘security’ and governance are much provided by these groups? How do prison gang members and non-members navigate the issues of both safety and rehabilitation? Diving into this apparent paradox, this panel aims to explore the intersections of prison governance, gender and reinsertion.
