Session Submission Type: Panel
Since the 1980s, there continues to be an increased interest both in research and teaching of languages for specific purposes in the Unites States. As pertinent research (Uber Grosse, Geoffrey Voght, Mary Long, Izabella Uscinski, Barbara Lafford, among others) has consistently shown, it was not until the 1980s that this discipline started to see new and horizons of promising and sound teaching and research, mostly on aural and written discourse and methodologies on learning activities from professional content areas such as business, engineering, medicine, and education, among others. Taking salient theoretical underpinnings and the general established rationale behind this "new" type of courses into consideration, the presenters in this panel will focus on how--based on the specific needs of their individual institutional/educational/departmental contexts--to design and implement Spanish courses for the professional world, an emerging and promising discipline that seems to have come to stay.
Theoretical Underpinnings and Practical Applications: Spanish for the Professions in the United States - Eduardo Alfonso Caro Meléndez, Arizona State University
