Latin American Regionalism and the Role of Theory

Wed, May 23, 12:30 to 2:00pm, TBA

Abstract

This paper aims at inserting the discussion on the role of the theory of regional integration beyond the EU (and in Latin America more specifically) in the recent debates on the dominance of ‘Western’ (i.e. European and US) theories in the international relations discipline and the need to consider the ideas and voices from the Global South. The goal of the paper is triple. The paper seeks, first, to contribute to the discussion on the exportability of regional integration theories. I.e. to assess whether the theoretical tools developed in the study of regional integration in Europe are of any relevance to explain and understand the processes that have taken place in the Global South, in our case Latin America and the Caribbean. It explores, second, the existence of Latin American voices and ideas on regional integration and, particularly, if those voices have contributed to theorizing regionalism/regional integration. And third, the paper assesses the role and status of theory in the current academic production (on regionalism) in the region.
