From Buenos Aires to Tasmania: Shifting Coordinates in Mariana Enriquez’s Transnational Presence

Wed, November 19, 9:45 to 11:15am, TBA

Abstract

This paper examines the recent international relocation of Mariana Enriquez to Oceania—specifically, to the island state of Tasmania—and explores the cultural and literary implications of this move. As one of the most widely translated and globally recognized Latin American writers of her generation, Enriquez has long maintained a strong transnational literary presence. Her long-term residence in Tasmania, which began in March 2025, raises new questions about how the Australian context may influence her public voice, cultural perspective, and creative production.
Although it remains to be seen whether this geographic shift will shape the thematic content of her fiction, Enriquez’s current journalistic column in "Página 12" already suggests a hemispheric reorientation. More significantly, her active and widely followed Instagram account offers insight into her engagement with Australia’s artistic and cultural life. Since her relocation, Enriquez has posted regularly about local literary festivals, awards, exhibitions, and landscapes, making the cultural life of Australia more visible and accessible to her global readership.
This paper argues that Enriquez’s digital presence operates as a form of literary and cultural mediation, positioning Australia as an emergent reference space within the Latin American literary imagination. In doing so, she not only expands the symbolic geography of Latin American literature but also opens new avenues for cultural exchange between Latin America and the Australian-Pacific region.
