Memory and Postmemory in Post-Conflict South Asia and Latin America

Abstract

This panel explores literary and cinematic texts from Latin America and South Asia using the framework of memory studies. While issues relating to historical conflict and collective memory have been investigated around the world in the context of the World Wars, the Holocaust, Transitional Justice and Human Rights activism, the theoretical approaches and textual readings need to be necessarily embedded in specific historical and cultural contexts, including the Global South. The papers in this panel aim to open up discussion on South-South aspects of Memory Studies by examining the post conflict ‘memory turn’ in literary and cinematic texts from Argentina, Chile, India, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka.
