Session Submission Summary

Articulating the body in literacy research

Wed, November 30, 10:30am to 12:00pm, Omni Nashville, Floor: Level 2, Music Row 2

Session Submission Type: Symposium

Abstract

This panel focuses on the challenges in articulating the body in literacy research with a focus on classroom ethnographies, multimodal analysis, and poststructural accounts of children’s playful interactions. Juxtaposing diverse methodological approaches, it challenges established accounts of ‘subjects’ and ‘objects’ and raises questions about how literacy researchers interface with the empirical materials they collect. In doing so the panel asserts that ‘learning to talk about the body’, as Latour (2014) argues, demands multiple perspectives.
