Abstract

This alternative symposium addresses literacy in pre-carcerated, incarcerated, and reentry settings as a form of transformation, empowerment and social justice. The four papers examine different ways of conceptualizing and understanding literacy practices with pre-carcerated, incarcerated or formerly incarcerated people and considers implications for teacher education, public policy, funding, and community outreach efforts. Following the research presentations, participants will discuss themes across the studies and discuss how issues within the research surface in their own work.
