This study investigates how online multimodal reading strategies influence individual readers’ text comprehension and topic knowledge building by analyzing knowledge units. Ten competent adult readers engaged with multimodal informational text reading on the Internet on a scientific topic. Each reader’s verbal protocol, reader-computer interaction, retrospective interview, and written pre and post-knowledge report were analyzed. Their knowledge units increased after multimodal reading, and online multimodal reading strategies were beneficial for topic understanding and online reading.
