One pathway toward improving outcomes in literacy education is to increase the racial literacy knowledge of teachers in their inductive years. Here, descriptive results from a survey study provide a national snapshot of novice teachers’ racial literacy. Findings suggest that students of alternatively certified teachers are less likely to critically examine portrayals of race than teachers prepared elsewhere. Additionally, teachers report greater applied racial literacy than conceptual racial literacy. Implications for teacher education are discussed.
