AI Dictation: Examining the Transfer of Oral Language to Sight Vocabulary

Thu, December 4, 3:00 to 4:30pm, Planet Hollywood Hotel & Casino, Floor: Mezzanine Floor, Santa Monica 2

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to examine the transfer of oral vocabulary to sight vocabulary among first-grade students who struggled to read and composed, published, and shared personalized literary variations using AI Dictation (e.g., Siri, Alexa, Talk to Text). Despite inaccuracies, findings indicate that AI Dictation may provide opportunities to transfer oral lexicons as sight vocabulary, support learners’ preparedness to read unfamiliar texts, and struggles to read may be attributable to school text hegemony.
