“Eventually I Had a Sense of Belonging”: Understanding Community-based Literacy Assemblage across Chinese Rural-Urban Boundaries

Wed, December 3, 10:15 to 11:45am, Planet Hollywood Hotel & Casino, Floor: Mezzanine Floor, Melrose 2

Abstract

Viewing literacy as assemblage, this paper explores the empowering potential of community-based literacy through a nuanced analysis of a “successful” Chinese rural student’s narrative. Focusing on Bo’s community-rooted literacies assembled across rural and urban boundaries, this study reveals how literacy assemblage fosters intercultural competence and self-worth, highlighting the power of community-based literacy for marginalized students.
