This session applies Disability Sustaining Pedagogy (DSP) which explicitly draws on the knowledge and lived experiences of disabled individuals to ask, “what strategies do educators with disabilities use to sustain their own disability identities and support disabled and nondisabled youth?” Drawing from semi-structured interviews with disabled teachers, findings suggest that these educators have expertise in the science disability because of their experience with the medical system. They leverage their expertise in non-stigmatizing, humanizing teaching practices.
