Reading Cross-Cultural Literary Texts: Examining the Reading Responses of US College Students to African Poetry.

Abstract

The study examined how US college students navigated understanding and interpretation of an African poem using discourse analysis approach. Findings indicated that students interpreted the poem from their sociocultural perspectives based on the literal meaning of the words. This study has implications for cross-cultural literary reading and comprehension instruction.
