A Peek at Small Group Reading Instruction After Completion of Science of Reading Professional Development

Abstract

In 2021, North Carolina enacted the Excellent Public School Act to strengthen literacy instruction by ensuring teachers are trained in research-based reading practices. A major component of this initiative was the implementation of Language Essentials for Teachers of Reading and Spelling (LETRS) professional development. Our research question is: After completing LETRS training, what elements of the Science of Reading do teachers include during small group instruction and how are these practices implemented?
