Raad, Spidey and Silences: Embodied Literacy in a Postcolonial Bangladeshi Home

Wed, December 3, 8:30 to 10:00am, Planet Hollywood Hotel & Casino, Floor: Mezzanine Floor, Celebrity Ballroom 6

Abstract

Through Raad’s interactions with a Spider-Man plush toy, this study explores his unfolding literacy experiences. Guided by the concepts of literacy-as-event and embodied literacy, it examines how literacy emerges in everyday moments through gestures, silences, and play beyond classroom. It portrays how Raad’s embodied practices, cultural knowledge, and global popular culture symbols intersect in a postcolonial context and highlights the relational, fluid, and political, unfolding in mundane yet profound literacy events within hybrid cultural spaces.
