In this presentation, the authors offer a Posthuman Perspective for understanding “writing systems,” a term that has historically limited what counts as writing. The authors use four examples of semiotic systems that have not been included in traditional definitions of writing systems to analyze through a posthuman framework. The findings offer attendees an expansive conceptualization of writing systems that can be applied to historically, present, or future-oriented literacy research.
