Struggling, at risk or college ready? Labels used in literacy research

Abstract

The purpose of this explorative study is to survey the professional academic writing, specifically empirically-based peer reviewed articles from high ranked research and practitioner journals in literacy, for the labels used to refer to students of differing reading abilities. We share findings from a sample of articles from high ranked research and practitioner journals in literacy, English language arts, second language learning, and special education, for an 11-year span from 2014-2024.
