This paper examines the language and literacy practices of an Afghan American refugee family at home and in the community. Data collection entailed semi-structured interviews, participant observation, reflection journal and photos. Findings showed that the family and a focal child, Mirwais, engaged in a plethora of rich language and literacy practices and several of the literacy practices centered on their Muslim identity. The family’s literacy and language practices are identified along with implications.
